President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Bush,
As a person of faith, I can no longer stand by and let you continue the evil path you have chosen. I know that you also have faith in the one God, but Mr. President, I truly believe that you have allowed other voices to drown out the strong message of peace for ALL God’s children. This is the divine will of God for all people on earth. Peace is not a task we can achieve on our own. Only through following the Spirit, which is offered to all, can such a peace be achieved.
You have set our nation on a destructive path. You have set our country up as a false idol, expecting others to “bow down and worship” at the feet of democracy. Your continued insistence upon military dominance only fuels the violence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every single day that our troops continue to be present in these places gives those who hate us reason to inflict violence upon their fellow citizens. Mr. President, it is not the will of the American people that you continue on this destructive course. When you stand before us and declare that you and your advisors know best how to handle this, you imply that the American people lack the skills and understanding to tackle such a huge problem. Mr. President, the American people are not stupid! We do see the violence your path has wrought, and we no longer can stand silently by while you manipulate and bully us. If you continue to ignore the will of the people, Mr. President, I believe your place in history may be compared to the dictator whom you so proudly destroyed, Saddam Hussein. For when you try to force our democracy upon others, the very act of doing so removes democracy from your own people.
My prayer for you is that you will fall upon your knees before God, Mr. President, honestly and humbly asking forgiveness, and then ask for guidance in your path. For you have been given a great task as leader of this nation and your sin and failure to heed the will of God has greater consequences for all peoples of the world. Please, Mr. President, listen to the voice of God. You will hear in that voice the true voice of peace.
May the peace of God be with you,
Jacqueline R. Berlien
