Twenty-three years ago, the Israeli army killed a Palestinian child in Gaza, called Mohammed al-Durra. Now, it killed many other members of his family.
Jamal al-Durra, Mohammed’s father, found himself in the same position, once more, kneeling down to say goodbye to other members of his family.
Seven members of Jamal’s family were killed in the Israeli bombardment in Gaza.
He came to take a last look at their bodies, draped in white coffins, following a prayer for the dead at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Mosque in the city of Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip.
“Reserve a place for me with you (in heaven),” he said, while shedding familiar tears.
“Israel bombed the homes of my brothers, killed my brothers, my brother’s wife and his only daughter, and killed dozens of my neighbors, most of them children,” he said, Aljazeera Arabic reported.
For Jamal, it felt that the blood of his son Mohammed, “is still flowing.”
Mohammed al-Durra, 11, was the icon of Second Palestinian Intifada. He was killed by Israel on September 28, 2000.
A video filmed by a French TV correspondent recorded the killing of the child, as he was sheltering beside his father in Salah al-Din Street, south of Gaza City.
Mohammed was immediately killed, and Jamal was seriously injured.
