Parliament called on Thursday for international efforts to help end a 57-day hunger strike by five Jordanian inmates in Israel who are protesting prison conditions.

“We hold Israel responsible for the safety and life of the Jordanian prisoners holding an open-ended hunger strike,” MPs said in a statement.

“We support their legitimate demands to have decent prison conditions and treatment, including the chance to see their families.”

The lower house of parliament urged “international organizations, rights groups and the Red Cross to help end the suffering of the prisoners and push for meeting their demands.”

“We hail the courage of all prisoners in Israeli jails for their legendary resistance of the Israel’s arrogance and racism.”

The families of the prisoners say they are protesting “ill-treatment and bad conditions” in Israeli jails.

They are demanding Israel release them or transfer them to Jordan and reveal the whereabouts of missing Jordanians in the Jewish state.

“We demand the government transfer them to Jordan in line with the 1994 peace treaty with Israel,” they said in a statement on Facebook.

There are 26 Jordanian prisoners in Israel.

In 2007, Israel transferred to the kingdom four Jordanians serving life sentences for killing two Israeli soldiers in November 1990.
