The Al-Qassam Brigades announced on Friday the killing of a captive soldier during a failed attempt by Israeli special forces to rescue him in Gaza.

In a statement conveyed via Telegram, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas, said that its fighters discovered an Israeli special forces unit mounting a rescue attempt.

According to the statement, the fighters attacked the unit, killing and wounding several Israeli soldiers. Moreover, the fighters reportedly took control of a rifle and a communications device used by Israeli Special Forces.

“The military aviation intervened and bombed the area with a series of raids to cover their retreat,” the statement said.

Al-Qassam revealed the name of the Israeli captive soldier who was reportedly killed, identifying him as 25-year-old Saar Baruch, who carried an ID number 207775032.

The rescue of captives held in Gaza is one of the goals of Israel’s ground operation.

Thus far, however, Israeli captives were only released during a seven-day truce that started on November 24 and collapsed on December 1.

The truce included a prisoner exchange deal between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas.
