Palestinian Islamic movement, Hamas has declared readiness to help Egypt restore security along the border between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula.

"We reiterate our readiness to cooperate with our brothers in Egypt to ensure the security of our borders and our common interests," Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said on Sunday.

Addressing thousands of Palestinians during Eid al-Fitr prayers in Gaza, Haniyeh said Hamas will cooperate with Egypt, “but not with the Zionist regime.”

Haniyeh’s remarks came in the wake of recent clashes between gunmen and Egyptian security forces in the Sinai region near Egypt’s border with Israel, that claimed the lives of at least 16 Egyptian border guards on August 6.

Meanwhile on Saturday, three other Egyptian soldiers were wounded in an ambush by armed men on their vehicle with a rocket propelled grenade.

Hundreds of troops have been deployed to the restive region to prevent any future attacks after Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi pledged to strongly respond to the "cowardly attacks," vowing that the assailants would pay for the deadly attacks.

Dozens of gunmen have been also killed in airstrikes carried out by Egyptian Air Force in Tumah village in the Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas say Israeli spy agency Mossad was behind the border attack.

Egypt has been trying to secure its borders following last year’s revolution, which resulted in the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.

In January 2011, the Egyptians launched the revolution against the pro-Israeli regime, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of Mubarak.
