The Israeli Planning and Construction Committee of the Jerusalem Municipality approved a project yesterday to build more buildings and houses along the line of the light trail connecting East and West Jerusalem.
Israeli General Radio said, “The committee approved a project to build hotels, shopping malls, and buildings as tall as 30-storeys, along the line of the light trail in East Jerusalem.”
The Israeli mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barakat, said, “The project would add thousands of housing units and expand shopping areas along the line of light trail.”

The Jerusalem Light Trail was built along the line connecting East Jerusalem with West Jerusalem. Veolia, the French company that was operating the light trail withdrew from the project in 2015, under pressures from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
The Israeli occupation tried to sell the project by claiming it would boost tourism and provide thousands of housing units to avert criticism from building inside the 1967 boundaries, which the international community deems illegal.

Last week Israel approved the building of 90 more housing units in the settlement of Gilo to the south-west of Jerusalem.
The Israeli authorities have also handed over four demolition orders against Palestinian houses and facilities in Jerusalem’s neighborhood of Silwan in an attempt to drive Palestinians out of the city. Some of these buildings are 24-years-old.
