Two-week old Gaza-born conjoined twins who were in Saudi Arabia for treatment died in Riyadh on Saturday, the Saudi health minister said.

The twins’ condition was too delicate to operate, Dr. Abdullah al-Rabeeah stated. The two girls — Ritaj and Rittal — could not be separated because of the bacterial infection in their chests and because their hearts, livers, and digestive systems were intertwined, he said.

Born in Khan Yunis in the impoverished Gaza Strip on March 27, the twins were joined at the chest and shared a defective heart and other organs.

They were brought to the King Abdulaziz Medical City’s special conjoined twins center on Tuesday for a possible separation operation.

But after examining the twins, doctors said a day later that an operation would not be possible because their organs were too damaged and their health too critical.
