Defense attorneys seek to plead down charges against Israeli journalist Anat Kam after the regime decided to prosecute her for espionage.
Kam, 23, is accused of copying more than 2,000 military documents during her compulsory military service from 2005 to 2007 and passing them to Ha’aretz reporter Uri Blau.
Some 700 of the documents were classified as "confidential" or "highly confidential," prosecutors said.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, Ha’aretz reported.
She also faces other charges, including gathering and possessing classified materials with intent to harm state security, which carry a maximum 15-year prison sentence.
Kam’s lawyers, Avigdor Feldman and Eitan Lehman, argued that by passing on the information to Blau, she demonstrated that she did not intend to harm state security.
They said that had Kam sought to damage Israel, she would have made the material available to "hostile elements."
Kam’s mother also dismissed the charges against her, saying ‘It’s clear the Shin Bet came up with a crazy espionage story."
Kam has been under secret house arrest for almost four months.
