Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa has warned that the Middle East will head toward an arms race should Israel maintain its nuclear weaponry.
Speaking at a press conference in New York on Friday, Moussa stated that "It is inconceivable that only one country in the Middle East has nuclear weapons. Why should Israel be the only one?"
"There should be no nuclear power in the Middle East. We need to ensure that the Middle East is free from all nuclear weapons," he added.
His remarks came after the International Atomic Energy Agency once again voted against a resolution that called on Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Under the nuclear ambiguity policy, Tel Aviv neither confirms nor denies it possesses nuclear weapons.
Former US President Jimmy Carter has said Israel has between 200 and 300 nuclear warheads.
Arab states say there cannot be genuine peace in the Middle East until Israel abandons its nuclear weapons.
