An Israeli journalist accused of publishing classified intelligence obtained from a former army soldier has returned to Israel after nearly a year abroad, escaping probable consequences.
According to the Israeli Justice Ministry, Israeli police and the security agency Shin Bet will launch a thorough investigation into the "Anat Kamm" scandal involving Haaretz journalist Uri Blau, who allegedly received secret files from Kamm, a 23 year old army officer, Haaretz newspaper reported on Sunday.
Kamm has been indicted for copying over 2,000 secret files during her military service at the Israeli military and giving them to the journalist.
Blau had lived in London and Berlin for about a year following the revelation that the justice ministry would write up charges against him.
He has agreed to be interrogated by the Shin Bet and the police officers within 48 hours of his arrival.
The journalist has been implicated in the scandal for illegal disclosure of secret documents including military information, security and situation assessments, meetings’ minutes and protocols, highly sensitive intelligence information, orders of deployment and battle, drill briefings, and warfare doctrines for the West Bank.
Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein is expected to hand over the final verdict as to whether Blau could face criminal charges.
Criminal charges including the possession and transfer of classified information with the intent to harm state security, which is tantamount to espionage have already been pressed against Kamm, who has admitted to have been the source of the leakage.
