Israel has released a Palestinian Authority (PA) politician, Abd al-Jaber Fuqaha, after he was held over false accusations in a prison in the Negev desert for 27 months.
Fuqaha was released on Thursday at the al-Thahiriya checkpoint near al-Khalil (Hebron), south of the occupied West Bank, Middle East Monitor reported on Friday.
"The occupation regime and their supporters are mistaken in their actions in this respect because the arrest and harassment of (Palestinian) politicians do nothing but increase their persistence towards realization of the dreams and aspirations of the people," he told reporters.
"The greatest concern for prisoners was the issue of the internal division in the Palestinian community," Fuqaha went on to say.
The PA politician further called for national unity.
"The greatest obstacle to popular unity is the security partnership and coordination between the Palestinian Authority and the Zionist occupation regime."
He said that the PA must end cooperation with the Israelis and embrace its own people.
According to Fuqaha, Hamas officials have outstretched their hands of friendship to the Fatah leadership for reconciliation, but no action has yet been taken.
Meanwhile, Palestinian human rights sources have reported that the wife of Sheikh Jamal al-Tawil, head of the al-Bireh municipality and a leader within the Hamas movement, was released from an Israeli jail on Thursday.
The 42-year-old activist, Muntaha al-Tawil, had been held in administrative detention since February 8, 2010. Her detention was extended four times in twelve months, a source said.
