Palestinian activists and parliament members in Israel have voiced support for popular protests in Egypt, calling on President Hosni Mubarak to step down. 

Scores of people from Balad party held a demonstration on Saturday in the city of Nazareth which was also attended by members of the Israeli parliament (Knesset), Hanin Zoabi and Jamal Zahalka, Ynet reported.

The protesters held placards with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s face crossed out, and joined popular voices in Egypt urging him to step down.

"The people want to overthrow Mubarak," and "Gamal Mubarak, tell your father the Arab people hate you," Other signs read.

"We are part of the Palestinian people, and part of the Arab nation despite the isolation that has been imposed on us,” Balad activists noted, vowing to “continue to be part of the Arab nation and share its affairs with it including the aspiration for freedom and social justice.”

"The success of the revolution will mark the beginning of a new age in Arab politics, especially given Egypt’s regional and international standing. Democracy will certainly affect Egypt’s domestic and foreign policy and will liberate it from the hegemony of US and Israeli interests and help it regain its status and respect in the Arab world."

Israel’s Palestinian lawmaker Zahalka also highlighted his movement’s support for the revolution and protests in Egypt and other Arab countries, expressing hope that the Israeli regime will be changed as well.

"We cannot overturn the Israeli government without the support of people in the Jewish sector. I think that what’s going on in Egypt will affect everyone including Israel."

Millions of Egyptians have been holding demonstrations for 13 days calling for an end to the three-decade dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak.
