Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted that Tel Aviv is responsible for kidnapping Palestinian engineer Dirar Abu Sisi in Ukraine.

"He is being held in detention in Israel. It is a legal arrest," Netanyahu was quoted as saying by Reuters on Wednesday.

Viktoria Kushnir, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, said Abu Sisi was kidnapped on February 19 after boarding a train in the eastern city of Kharkiv bound for the capital Kiev. She added that Abu Sisi was in Ukraine applying for citizenship.

Veronika Abu Sisi, wife of kidnapped Palestinian, says that according to a train conductor’s statement, two hours after the train’s departure, two unidentified individuals came inside the train carriage and took Sisi away at Poltava station.

Abu Sisi was a manager at the Gaza Strip’s main power plant. Some reports have linked Abu Sisi’s abduction to Israel’s intent to sabotage the work of the only power generation unit in Gaza.

The abduction of Sisi has raised concerns among Palestinians that reside in Ukraine over their security and the extension of Mossad’s activities in the European country.

Hamas has also condemned the abduction and demanded the engineer’s release.

"This kidnapping violates international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty. It is further proof of the contempt of the Israeli occupation for the international community," spokesman Sami Abu Zohi said.

The Palestinian engineer would be indicted next week, sadi his lawyer on Thursday, adding that Israeli authorities did not tell her what the charges would be.
