A leading member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) has dismissed Israeli "peace" proposals as the “reinvention of Israeli occupation.”

Leaked details of Israel’s peace initiative show that it is a system of annexation and control, rather than a genuine attempt to end the occupation, PLO member Hanan Ashrawi told AFP.

Ashrawi made the remarks after a The Los Angeles Times report suggested that the international community could try to pressure Israel into unveiling a new peace initiative.

The report said the Middle East Quartet (composed of the European Union, Russia, the United States and the United Nations) could try to pressure Israel by endorsing the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering several alternative "peace proposals" that include a so-called interim deal, or a partial withdrawal from the West Bank.

However, the Palestinians have rejected any temporary or partial agreement, and have instead called for a comprehensive, negotiated agreement.

"Deliberate Israeli leaks of the so-called ‘Netanyahu initiative’ show it to be little more than a reinvention of Israel’s occupation as a system of annexation and control, rather than a genuine attempt to end the occupation and abide by international law and the requirements of peace," Ashrawi said.

Talks between Israel and Palestine have been stalled since September over Israeli refusal to extend its partial freeze on settlement expansion in the West Bank.
