The body of a Palestinian teen who was shot dead by Israeli forces on May 15 will be exhumed Wednesday, a Palestinian official said.

Attorney General Muhammad Abd al-Ghani al-Uweili said in a statement that the body of Nadim Nuwara would be exhumed and taken to the Palestinian Institute of Forensic Medicine for an investigation into the exact cause of his death.

Police, along with medical teams and legal officials, will exhume the body in accordance with Palestinian and Islamic law, the statement said.

The decision was made after receiving permission from Nuwara’s family and a fatwa from the grand mufti of Jerusalem.

Palestinian medical teams will seek the assistance of international experts for the investigation into Nuwara’s death, al-Uweili said.

Nuwara and another Palestinian teenager, Muhammad Audah Abu al-Thahir, were shot dead by Israeli forces on the 66th anniversary of the Nakba during protests near Ofer prison outside Ramallah.

Video footage from the incident has shown that neither of the youths were involved in clashes at the time of their deaths, which Palestinian medics say were caused by live fire.

Israeli army officials have denied that live fire was used while soldiers were dispersing the clashes, but say an investigation has been opened into the teens’ deaths.
